Neurofeedback Frequently Asked Questions

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a gentle, non-invasive form of brain training. Small sensors listen to your brain’s natural electrical activity and reflect it back through sound or visual cues in real time. With practice, your brain learns to find balance, focus, and calm more easily on its own.

What happens during a session?

You sit comfortably while sensors are placed on your scalp and earlobes with a safe conductive paste. Nothing is put into your brain. When your brain produces a balanced pattern, you hear a pleasant tone or see a visual cue. When it shifts away, the feedback pauses. Your brain uses this information to self-correct.

How does it feel?

Most people describe sessions as calming and restorative. You do not have to try to do anything. Your brain does the learning automatically. Many notice feeling clearer, more centered, or pleasantly tired in a good way.

How many sessions will I need?

Every brain learns at its own pace, but most people begin to notice subtle improvements—such as clearer thinking, better sleep, or a calmer mood—within the first five sessions. In general, 20 sessions are often enough for clients with straightforward goals, while 30–40 sessions may be ideal for deeper patterns such as trauma recovery, chronic stress, or attention-related issues. Training twice per week tends to accelerate learning, while once-per-week sessions work well for gradual, steady progress. Because every brain is unique, we review your experience regularly and adjust your plan as you go.

What can neurofeedback help with?

Clients commonly seek support for attention and focus, stress and anxiety regulation, sleep quality, emotional balance, resilience after difficult experiences, and performance in school, creativity, athletics, or work. Neurofeedback is a training process and is not a medical treatment or diagnosis.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Yes. Neurofeedback is non-invasive and drug-free. It has been used for more than five decades in wellness, education, and performance settings. The most common temporary effects are mild tiredness, emotional release, or vivid dreams as the brain recalibrates. Rarely, mild skin irritation may occur from the electrode paste.

Why is your system unique?

Every brain has its own rhythm and response style. With BrainPrint system observes how your brain responds to simple sensory and emotional cues and then reflects those patterns back to you. It does not diagnose. It helps personalize training so that feedback matches your own learning style for more precise and meaningful change.

How is EEG used here?

EEG is a way to listen to the brain’s electrical activity at the surface of the scalp. In neurofeedback, EEG is used to provide moment-to-moment feedback so the brain can adjust itself. At mindyourspace, EEG is used for training and self-regulation. Medical interpretation and diagnosis of EEG are the role of neurologists.

How will we measure my progress?

We track how you feel and function in daily life. We look at sleep, focus, energy, mood steadiness, stress recovery, and the specific goals you set. You can expect gentle shifts that build over time, much like physical training.

Will neurofeedback cure my condition or replace medication?

Neurofeedback is not a cure and does not replace medical or psychological care. Many people experience meaningful improvements, but results vary. Any changes to medication should always be made with your prescribing clinician.

Can neurofeedback help with anxiety or stress reactions?

Yes. Many clients notice calmer body states, steadier breathing, and fewer spikes of reactivity as training progresses. The aim is a nervous system that returns to center more easily.

Can neurofeedback support trauma recovery?

Yes. Certain protocols help the nervous system move out of fight, flight, or freeze and into a steadier baseline. People often report feeling safer in their body and more able to respond rather than react. Neurofeedback can be a supportive complement to trauma-informed therapy.

Can neurofeedback help with attention and focus?

Yes. Training can strengthen sustained attention, mental clarity, and executive functioning. People often describe less distractibility and more follow-through.

Can neurofeedback help with sleep?

Many clients report falling asleep more easily, fewer night wakings, and feeling more rested. Better regulation during the day often shows up as better sleep at night.

Does neurofeedback work for children and teens?

Yes. Sessions are gentle and do not require talking. Many families seek support for attention, emotional regulation, sleep, and school performance. Training plans are adapted to each child’s needs and comfort.

What might I feel after a session?

Many people feel relaxed or pleasantly alert. Temporary effects can include mild tiredness, a wave of emotion, or vivid dreams. These usually pass within a day or two. Share your experience with us so we can tailor training.

What are the different types of training you use?

We select from several protocol families based on your goals. Examples include SMR for calm focus and sleep support, beta training for attention and motivation when balanced carefully, alpha-theta for deep relaxation and emotional processing, and nonlinear training for stabilizing sensitive moods and reactivity. Your plan is individualized and can change over time.

What if I have a history of seizures or a very sensitive system?

Neurofeedback is non-invasive. If you have a seizure history or a highly sensitive nervous system, we will proceed thoughtfully, choose gentle protocols, and collaborate with your medical providers as appropriate. Always share your health history on your intake forms.

How long are sessions and how often should I come?

Most sessions take about 45 to 60 minutes. Many people come once or twice per week. Consistency helps the brain build new habits. We will recommend a rhythm that fits your goals and schedule.

What if I do not notice anything right away?

That is common. Subtle changes often show up first, such as sleeping a bit better, getting out of bed more easily, or feeling less stuck after a stressful moment. We reassess at regular intervals and adjust your plan if needed.

Will I need maintenance sessions?

Some people like an occasional booster session after they finish their main plan, especially during life transitions or high stress periods. Others feel complete. We will decide together.

Can I combine neurofeedback with therapy, coaching, or bodywork?

Yes. Neurofeedback pairs well with psychotherapy, coaching, mindfulness, yoga, physical therapy, and many other approaches. It supports regulation, which can make other work deepen and integrate.

Are there people who are not good candidates?

Most people can participate. If you have an acute medical concern or complex neurological condition, we may ask for clearance from your healthcare provider. If paste contact on the skin is a concern, we will discuss options.

Is this diagnostic?

No. Neurofeedback is wellness-based. We do not diagnose or interpret EEG medically. Only neurologists provide medical EEG interpretation. We focus on training and functional change in daily life.

What about results I saw online that promise a cure?

It is important to be cautious with promises. Brains are unique and results vary. Our commitment is to thoughtful assessment, individualized training, honest communication, and collaboration with your other providers.
